This activity will help you learn about the different steps when facilitating a game design process. At he same time, it will offer you some tips when doing it.

A game design process can be tailored to different backgrounds and realities (thus, even further contributes to the process of inclusion) and leads to both personal and professional development of those involved in it. To facilitate it well:
  • Take participants needs’, motivations and abilities into consideration.
  • Provide structure, but also leaving enough flexibility for adaptation.
  • Design opportunities for participants to use their diverse competences, as well as to develop them further.
  • Design interventions that assess group participation level and ensure everyone’s participation.
  • Support the participants. Specially, in managing expectations and frustration. the process can also create quite some frustration (e.g. when the outcome does not meet the expectations or when the workload is too much) , which is a great source of learning, but can also be a reason for some participants to walk away from the process. Especially if their tolerance to frustration is fairly low. Hence, if there would be one important message that we would like to pass onto other facilitators of the game design process is to prepare themselves for those moments and pay close attention to when they emerge in order to be able to support participants to transform them into learning instead of a demotivating defeat.
